It is easy to grow numb to the litany of environmental devastation in recent years. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic killed thirty million people; atmospheric CO2 stands fifty per cent higher than two centuries ago (currently 423.6 ppm); wildfires rage in Chile and Argentina, while 11,300 people were killed by an overnight flood in Derna; less than a tenth of the world’s plastic is recycled; over 75 billion livestock animals are killed every year; the number of coastal ‘dead zones’ increased from 10 in 1960 to 415 in 2023; the US government declared twenty-one species formerly found in its territory extinct in 2023. One can go on, and on, and on.
At the same time, the last thirty years has seen the development of sophisticated radical critiques of environmental degradation and the ‘capitalocene’, the need for struggle to achieve transformation in response to the continued failure of centrists to achieve meaningful reform.

At The Experimental Station for Research on Art and Life
Organised under the frame of the Creative Europe project Architecture, Biodiversity, Culture [ABC]. Building ecological institutions for culture, the event brings together three self-organised practices of civic action that operate at the intersection of different disciplines through collaborative work and ways of coming together that respond to the specific conditions of each site. Driven by an interest and desire to cultivate collaborations, taking care of neighbourhood connections, building temporary urban furniture and installations with local inhabitants, or by developing potential living scenarios for marginalised urban communities, all three projects seek a new language of practice or new practices altogether for imagining and creating different forms of living.

The Experimental Station for Research on Art and Life
Siliștea Snagovului village
After a Gregorian calendar year, Helsinki-based artist Jaana Kokko returns to the village of Siliștea Snagovului. She is interested in gathering with the plants that are growing on the sides, taking the position of being not in the center. She asks: What are they revealing us with their hidden pigments and forms? And even more: What does it need from a garden to become a place/ space for emancipation, a place for political enlightenment?
Her search in the fields around the Station is inspired by dear places of her past, and the emotional connection to Maitohorsma, Fireweed (Ebilobium angustifolium).
The plant is very common in Finland, and it appears especially when the forests are cut clear, which is unfortunately still very common practice. One hundred years Fireweed was still rare in Central Europe, but the burning ruins of both world wars gave space for it and it started to blossom on the lands emptied by fire. The leaves of Fireweed unveil a yellow light pigment. The color gives pleasure, when it appears, it feels like a small, uncovered secret.
After her research residency at the Station last year, Jaana focuses this time on a precise task, albeit one that shows the ephemerality of being in this world. Collecting flowers and seeds from the area, while paying attention these are plentiful, she extracts the pigments from them, using the organic colours afterwards for woodcut printing. At the same time, this offers the team of the Station an occasion to learn the skill of working with plants pigments in order to further challenge the community of artists around (as well as the children in the village) on the importance of materials used in art, and of accepting the limited time an art work may exist in the world.

'Gathering into the Maelstrom' – at Sale Docks Dorsoduro 265 in Venice – is an invitation to learn to inhabit the vortex of our contemporary moment, rooting artistic production in ecological struggles, and transforming the field of contemporary art into a political territory. To generate a Museum of the Commons we must both question the toxicity that permeates institutions and, at the same time, build non-capitalistic, non-colonial, non-patriarchal, and non-anthropocentric alliances.

We are very happy to welcome artist Hiwa K in a residency in Bucharest and at the Experimental Station for Research on Art and Life. In the frame of the "Museum of the Commons" project, he will give a presentation for the participants to the course "Non-Western Technologies for the Good Life", led by Ovidiu Tichindeleanu.
Hiwa K was born in Kurdistan-Northern Iraq in 1975. His informal studies in his home town Sulaymaniyah were focused on informal knowledge in a vernacular language. After moving to Europe in 2002, Hiwa K studied music as a pupil of the Flamenco master Paco Peña in Rotterdam, and subsequently settled in Germany. His works escape normative aesthetics but give a possibility of another vibration to vernacular forms, oral histories (Chicago boys, 2010), modes of encounter (Cooking with Mama, 2006) and political situations (This lemon tastes of apple, 2011).

For most of 2024, tranzitiasi has been and is involved in building a very ambitious project called the Museum of Real Estate Development, alongside a wide range of artists, thinkers, theorists and academics from the most diverse backgrounds and geographies. So far, a number of six online meetings have been held, meetings in which a group of sociologists - in dialogue with the rest of the guests - tried to expand, in a transdisciplinary framework, the multi-methodical empirical research from the theoretical framework of capitalist accumulation processes, as well as on the role of real estate development in these processes today. They considered the results of the REDURB project (and the 8 case studies from Romania: Cluj, Iasi, Brașov, Craiova, Bragadiru, Tg. Jiu, Reșita, Bârlad). Through these meetings was attempted to build a broad delimitation of the parameters in which the establishment of such a museum is possible and transferable in different, globalized geographies. The meetings were held in English and were followed by extensive discussions on how this body of knowledge can be translated into a multidisciplinary environment. The joint effort started online will take a more material form between August 1 and 5, 2024, when the whole group will meet, in person, in Iasi for a few intensive days where we will alternate presentation sessions, discussions, cooking, workshop situations or guided tours that will culminate with the vernissage of the Museum of Real Estate Development exhibition that will be opened in the transitiasi space.

Non-Western Technologies for the Good Life
The experimental course Non-Western Technologies for the Good Life (November 2023 - May 2024) celebrates as its starting point the anniversary of 50 years since the publication of Tools for Conviviality, considering that Ivan Illich’s call is as relevant as ever.
Modernization is an all-conquering force, yet it is never enough. The climate crisis looms large, while extractivism and the war against life are pressing on. Illich called for a “multidimensional balance of human life”, for finding a balanced scale to the growth of anything, and for identifying the convivial tools needed to rethink technology and the relation to the world. Relying on convivial tools would enable communities and societies to exit the trap of the paradigm of infinite accumulation, to develop self-sufficiency outside globalization, and to regain an ethical life outside extractivism, exploitation and impoverishment.

The “Telephone: Communication Technology & Communicating Technology” summer school organised by tranzit.ro/Cluj took place between the 14th and 20th of September of this year in Câmpu Cetații. It was a fruitful place for dialogue between participants, guest speakers and curators. The concepts about technology and society that acted as the project's foundation were developed and refined, leading to new connections between the speakers’ topics of interest, some of which were very unexpected.
As part of the “Telephone” project, we will be releasing a podcast series, featuring the guest speakers discussing their topics with each other. The whole 6-episode series will be available by the middle of November, and the first 4 episodes are already available on the project’s Facebook page. or here.
In the 1st episode, Alin Răuțoiu interviews Irina Dumitru and Alexandru Evanghelidis, the summer school’s curators, about the project’s objectives, what the stakes of the interdisciplinary study of technology are, and what’s next for the project. The episode also takes a quick look at the topics covered by the rest of the series.
The 2nd episode features Alin Răuțoiu, Marina Oprea, and Beti Toma discussing how we read the internet, who teaches us to read it, and what internet literacy even means.

PREMISE
In 1973, based on collective research developed at CIDOC in Cuernavaca, Mexico, on the monopoly of the industrial mode of production, Ivan Illich argued that “two thirds of mankind still can avoid passing through the industrial age”; he also proposed the concept of a “multidimensional balance of human life” as the framework for rethinking technology and re-evaluating one’s relation to tools. Illich showed that it is possible to identify a balanced scale to the growth of anything, and raised the challenge of doing the work at identifying such scales and convivial tools. Such work would enable communities and societies to exit the trap of the paradigm of infinite accumulation, to develop self-sufficiency outside globalization, and to regain an ethical life outside extractivism, exploitation and impoverishment.

”Ways of Organisation” project is continuing with a three day reading group with students from the Mural Arts Department, Visual Art and Design Faculty, “George Enescu” National Art University, Iasi. Trying to identify together in which way artists are not any different than any other professional groups in the participation to the dynamics of economical and social relations, we embarked on a different kind of attempt within the reading group practices and decided to research the ways artists decide to organize economically. We will be reading several articles from Art Work: A National Conversation About Art, Labor, & Economics, a magazine compiled by Temporary Services in 2009. Temporary Services made this newspaper in 2009 as a direct response to the financial collapse of 2008 and the devastating impact it had on the arts, artists, art museums, exhibitions spaces, curators and others working within the field of fine, community, or contemporary art. The magazine combines more theoretical texts and texts coming from a particular experience. How do we imagine the collapse of our familiar world, the zero-point of social and personal life? What do we think about the built environment and power systems that seem unbreakable? What learned and inherited stereotypes is our social and creative imagination captive to? The idea for the Zero Point Summer School was born out of a critique of two radical endpoints - apathy and blind trust - with the stated ambition that participants in the program would formulate new responses, or even utopias, by examining the built environment and urban planning practices in the context of social crisis situations.

Gathering has been and still is a steady and peaceful act which makes the world go round. In gathering, one practices the “arts of noticing” (Anna Tsing). It involves the noticing of seeds, roots, growth, transformations, decay, cycles, beginnings and ends, differences and diversity. A container, a bag, a vessel is made to hold everything together – entangled, assembled and collected.

Where: Siliștea Snagovului and surroundings, Romania (various locations)
Just after the summer ends, around the Siliștea Snagovului village and the Snagov Lake, in an itinerary taking us to the Experimental Station for Research, where a group of friends created an experiment for a future that we can still shape, to the Dolce Vita boat and to Ceausescu’s palace, to an anonymous bridge and on a bus guiding us from nearby Bucharest, six artists, scientists and activists will choreograph lecture-performances seeking out different vantage points from which to open up a view of a fragment of the rapidly changing landscape.
Lectures on the Weather evokes unexpected solidarities and complex affairs (human, gender, interspecies, post-human). These emerge out of conflicted zones and inhabit transitory spaces. They voice the feminist perspective: the shift from traditional structures to self-organized, horizontal movements and networks; from silence to voice and sound acting, from absence to emergence. They acknowledge the radicality of the emotional and the vulnerable amidst (and against) the intensifying pressures of the public present.

Location: Câmpu Cetății, Mureș County
The second edition of the yearly summer school Ecologies of Emancipation, organized by tranzit.ro/Cluj at Câmpu Cetății, Mureș County, will take place between August 31 and September 4, 2022 and will have as guiding theme the contemporary relations, tensions and interdependences between Science, State, and Society. As usual, the school aims to provide a meeting space and a catalyst for friendly but also qualified discussions between some of the most promising and relevant current research projects and theoretical perspectives from the broad field of social sciences, as so many potential resources for critique and political positioning in today's world.
This year’s edition aims to question the many faceted relations between science, state and society, as a crucial issue whose actuality can be declined on (at least) three axes: in our recent and ongoing past, as the particular modern constellations of science, state and society articulated by the political regimes and social formations of our last century; in the immediate present, as evidenced and dramatized in our current pandemic context with its political instrumentation of science and its corresponding growing social mistrust in both official science and politics; and finally, in our already present future, as the great reshuffling of the relation between science, society and politics urgently demanded by the climate crisis.

The summer camp Utopias of Solidarity 2022 has its focus on the activity of certain self-organized, politically engaged groups that were formed in the context of the intersectionality of multiple (financial, economic, ecological, migration, housing, care, political etc.) crises. By bringing together critical academic/professional approaches and practices based on the principles of solidarity and/or anticapitalism, we seek answers to the following questions: what utopia could mean for us today, or what can solidarity mean within our local context and environment of limited or scarce resources, but also to what possibilities for knowledge and resource alignment can we conceive in order to enable ourselves to cope on an everyday level with the effects of the aforementioned multiple crises that surround us?

Cinema Elvire Popesco, Bucharest
between 5:30 - 5:40 pm.
Artists from all over lately find a place around nature, which they transform learning from nature, where they align themselves with other time-measuring instruments, they reorder the artistic concepts they work with, they relativize the distances to the city and open possibilities of collaboration with neighbours, with other artists, with non-human species.
Drained by a global pandemic and a nearby war, we will seek forces to synchronise for a few minutes, on the 14th of May, with several artistic spaces that are connected to nature. We will be able to see a short recorded transmission of a collective performance with feet on the ground, an affirmation of a type of inhabiting nature without colonising it, an invitation to rethink artistic work on more sustainable basis, an acceptance of the fragility of existence as a reason to plant life around us.

We gather here from time to time is one of the comments scribbled inside the container which constituted the material base of the project Tei Community Centre. Inaugurated in Autumn 2016 in the Circus Park in Bucharest, Tei Community Centre functioned until 2019 as a platform for meetings, work gatherings, civic organisation, educational workshops, public events and presentations, becoming a landmark on the park’s alleys. A partnership between the Civic Initiative Group Tei Lake and the architectural group studioBASAR, the project demonstrated the need for such spaces and infrastructures in different neighbourhoods. To gather signified practicing a collective voice and claiming one’s right to the city.

Climatic predictions say that in the following 30 years the South of Romania is to become an arid steppe. There is an optimistic version, in which officials will massively invest in the re-creation of forest curtains in order to stop this direction. However, in the summer days when the desert wind blows over Bucharest, this scenario seems at best utopian. Another version is that for which we will try to adapt to the new conditions, together with the few species that are to survive alongside us.

1- 5 September 2021
Location: Câmpu Cetății, Mureș County
Between 1-5 September, in Câmpu Cetății, Mureș County, tranzit.org/Cluj will organize the first edition of a yearly summer school dedicated to exploring new critical perspectives in the field of humanities and social sciences. The school aims to provide a meeting space and a catalyst for friendly but also qualified discussions between some of the most promising and relevant current research directions in the field of social sciences, as potential resources for critique and political positioning in today's world.
This year's edition has as its generic theme "Ecologies of Emancipation", in the broadest sense of the terms and in the most diverse configurations of their relationship: what is the relationship between the different systems and subsystems of modernity and their components or inhabitants, and to what extent we can conceive and articulate this relationship in a way that is both politically emancipatory and ecologically realistic. Besides the immediate issue of the global climate crisis and its increasingly frequent and obvious effects, this year's meeting will also try to take a lateral look at this framework of issues, articulating a broader and more multidisciplinary perspective on the solidarity and tensions between the different systems of modernity, as well as on their specific impact and significance in the context of today's political, social and climate crisis.

On adult education: Paulo Freire
Paulo Freire had a substantial influence on community and social engaged art, for instance in defining the artist as an educator. For him, literacy was not a technical impediment or a mode of self-improvement, but a limit to participation. Literacy is not only reading the alphabet but also a way of thinking about our mode of participation, the inclusion practices, and the gatekeeping practices of certain social groups. We will examine reading together as a method of inclusion.

The Theatre Under Ground. The Jiu Valley after 1989 project focuses on the quotidian observation and critical analysis of day-to-day life in labourer communities which were hard hit by the political and social change after 1989. The project aims to document the economic situation, the life and work of miners in post-socialism, together with other categories
living in Jiu Valley. The Theatre Under Ground proposes a performative reconstruction of many documentary narratives. These interviews outlined the history of the Jiu Valley communities on the borderline between survival, migration, extinction and a possible revival.

tranzit. ro/ Iași has organised for two days a marathon event, with a semi-public character, with no photographic documentation. Projection and memory were the main instruments used in order to design and later to reconstitute the 12 tours made in pairs, 1:1. The twelve "guides" (artists, curators, theorists, one architect and one translator from Iași) offered one tour each to one or the other of the two invited artists, the latter being accompanied, as a result on six personal propaganda walks.
Originally designed as a propaganda service that tranzit. ro/ Iaşi could offer its guests, this institutional practice takes one step further and becomes externalised, thus creating infinite possibilities of imagining an urban space, both for the hosts and the guests.
The propaganda walks were designed for the first time as an institutional practice by Livia Pancu, on the occasion of the ENPAP - European Network for Public Art Producers meeting organised by the Vector Association in Iaşi in 2011.

tranzit.ro/ Cluj,
Samuel Brassai Str, no. 5.
Throughout the entire year, you can hear street musicians playing in the various corners of Cluj. They perform mainly in the downtown area, where most people are in a big hurry, just walking right by one another. It used to be thought that music can transform strangers, even very differing people, into one community, so we might imagine that street musicians are very socially engaged people. However, these performers, who have finished their professional studies, are not interested in merely making music; the street also provides an important income for them.

March – May 2014 /
A new project will start with the residency of Bucharest-based international Romanian artist Cristina David. She will inaugurate in March the newest chapter of tranzit. ro/ Iaşi regarding the residency program venture in our city. This invitation was sent after the encounter with her application for the AiR programme of tranzit and the ERSTE Foundation at MuseumsQuartier - 2014, a project that tranzit. ro/ Iaşi is very keen to produce in Iaşi. Cristina will collaborate for this project with the Danish writer Mikkel Rosengaard. Being interested a priori in the "democracy" of the "openness of calls" in the arts domain, tranzit. ro/ Iaşi is thus trying to question this issue both as its own practice, as well as the others' practice in the art world.

*THEME OF THIS EDITION: MATTERS OF METHOD*
When speaking about any type of action, be it physical or mental, an immediate transcription makes us describe it as a method. There are goals to be attained (however frivolous or blurry they might be) and an initial situation to start from. The method always develops in between these two. But what happens when the steps to take are not so clear, when the goal is lacking clarity or it even seems to be irrelevant? What motivates the use of a method and what feeds it?
