6th November 2025 | Nomadic School | tranzit ro/ Iași (Sf. Atanasie, 25, Iași)
Tereza Stejskalová (tranzit.cz, Prague), Georg Schöllhammer (tranzit.at, Vienna), Dóra Hegyi (tranzit.hu, Budapest), Livia Pancu & Florin Bobu (tranzit ro/ Iași), Marius Alexandru Dan (independent researcher, Iași), Theo Prodromidis (independent artist, Athens), Mick Wilson (HDK-Valand/CAPIm, Gothenburg)
Cultural institutions usually operate locally, regionally and at most, at the national level, while wider, transnational configurations have been historically difficult to sustain both conceptually and infrastructurally. Attempting to answer how we connect remotely to places and people situated hundreds or thousands of kilometers away—across differences in infrastructure, resources, and political borders, this nomadic school brings together curators, historians, and artists to explore transnational cultural practices.
The public program includes a new art commission by artist Theo Prodromidis, a presentation on statehood and nation-building by historian Marius Alexandru Dan, and a discussion on transnational curating with representatives of tranzit.org network (Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Iași) moderated by Mick Wilson.

Questions of the political have been engaged within artistic practice and wider art systems with increasing intensity in recent decades. At the same time we seem to be witnessing radical upheaval in the actualities of everyday political cultures, locally, nationally, and internationally. We are faced with a challenge to consider, that given the rapidity of wider transformations, are these forms of engagement – these strategies, ways of proceeding, operating principles across art and the political – adequate to these changed conditions? And where do we approach these questions from?

6:30 p.m - 8:30 p. m
Screening of video works by: Pavel Braila (Shoes For Europe, 26 min, DV, Colour, Non-Spoken, 2002), Matei Bejenaru (Looking for Caslav, 8:54, 2002 and Moldova, 10:07, 2016), Dan Acostioaei (Crossroads, 2 min 32 sec, 2004), Edi Constantin (302.22.46.08, 3 min 56 sec, 2005 and Romania is Waiting, 3 min 57 sec, 2005), Cristina David (The Real Reason of the Migration of People in Europe to West (Adevaratul motiv al migratiei oamenilor catre vest), 1 min 57 sec, 2006 and Gustavus Adolphus Magnus, 1 min 29, 2011), Andreea Faciu (Touching the City, No. 1 (Iasi, RO), 13 min 25 sec, 2007), Vladimir Us (The March, 4 min. 29 sec, 2012), Simona Dumitriu & Ramona Dima (Bahlui Arcadia, 31 min 20 sec, 2015), Dan Acostioaei (Mari sub pustiuri, 9 min 53 sec, 2017), s.a.b.a (Silvia Amancei & Bogdan Armanu): (Video Monuments, part 1 (Mitrita & Silvia sr.), documentary, 21 min. 01 sec., 2018 and Video Monuments, part 2 (Doru), documentary, 15 min. 30 sec., 2018), Sit Vertical (Livia Pancu & Florin Bobu) (Silk District, 4 min 14 sec, 2021), Ghenadie Popescu (Lant trofic, video, 8 min 30 sec, 2022), Drazen Crnomat (Kiew, video, 1 min. 29 sec., 2024).
The artistic works included in this video program were produced by former or current friends, colleagues and collaborators of tranzit iași starting from the 2000s and span almost 25 years. In a spirit of solidarity, they were offered free of charge to be presented to colleagues who chose to participate in the intensive program about art and politics in Iași and Chișinău. This is not the first such attempt of tranzit iasi to critically reflect on the video production realized in this context and we feel that this gesture of solidarity cannot be explained only by the need for visibility that many of these artists (rightfully) share. Therefore, we look at these video works with an additional sense of responsibility that derives from the fact that they are entrusted to us to be analyzed and historically contextualized.
The various aspects of economic, military and ideological separation that we have witnessed in recent years, the proximity of the war in Ukraine, the increasingly acute awareness of the regional and global character of this conflict, the confluence and continuity with other regional conflicts, as well as the imminent composition and generalization of the conflict at a global level leaves an extremely pronounced imprint on the reception of these video works.

@tranzit. ro/Iași
For most of 2024, tranzitiasi has been and is involved in building a very ambitious project called the Museum of Real Estate Development, alongside a wide range of artists, thinkers, theorists and academics from the most diverse backgrounds and geographies. So far, a number of six online meetings have been held, meetings in which a group of sociologists - in dialogue with the rest of the guests - tried to expand, in a transdisciplinary framework, the multi-methodical empirical research from the theoretical framework of capitalist accumulation processes, as well as on the role of real estate development in these processes today. They considered the results of the REDURB project (and the 8 case studies from Romania: Cluj, Iasi, Brașov, Craiova, Bragadiru, Tg. Jiu, Reșita, Bârlad). Through these meetings was attempted to build a broad delimitation of the parameters in which the establishment of such a museum is possible and transferable in different, globalized geographies. The meetings were held in English and were followed by extensive discussions on how this body of knowledge can be translated into a multidisciplinary environment. The joint effort started online will take a more material form between August 1 and 5, 2024, when the whole group will meet, in person, in Iasi for a few intensive days where we will alternate presentation sessions, discussions, cooking, workshop situations or guided tours that will culminate with the vernissage of the Museum of Real Estate Development exhibition that will be opened in the transitiasi space.

10 am - 2 pm, daily
”Ways of Organisation” project is continuing with a three day reading group with students from the Mural Arts Department, Visual Art and Design Faculty, “George Enescu” National Art University, Iasi. Trying to identify together in which way artists are not any different than any other professional groups in the participation to the dynamics of economical and social relations, we embarked on a different kind of attempt within the reading group practices and decided to research the ways artists decide to organize economically. We will be reading several articles from Art Work: A National Conversation About Art, Labor, & Economics, a magazine compiled by Temporary Services in 2009. Temporary Services made this newspaper in 2009 as a direct response to the financial collapse of 2008 and the devastating impact it had on the arts, artists, art museums, exhibitions spaces, curators and others working within the field of fine, community, or contemporary art. The magazine combines more theoretical texts and texts coming from a particular experience. You can download the newspaper here: https://halfletterpress.com/art-work-a-national-conversation-about-art-labor-economics-pdf/

On adult education: Paulo Freire
Paulo Freire had a substantial influence on community and social engaged art, for instance in defining the artist as an educator. For him, literacy was not a technical impediment or a mode of self-improvement, but a limit to participation. Literacy is not only reading the alphabet but also a way of thinking about our mode of participation, the inclusion practices, and the gatekeeping practices of certain social groups. We will examine reading together as a method of inclusion.

tranzit. ro/ Iaşi,
7-9 Al. Lăpuşneanu Street
Over the past two years, tranzit. ro/ Iaşi managed to acquire a selection of books – which did not necessarily follow a precise concept – in order to create a small-scale public library related to contemporary art and curating...
Jesse McKee is invited to develop the new series in the frame of tranzit. ro/ Iași library program consisting in six reading groups sessions with the participants from Iaşi.

A workshop with and for Andreas Fogarasi and Christian Mayer /

Together with: Luminița Apostu, Dan Acostioaei, Florin Bobu, Delia Bulgaru, Bogdan Chelariu, Cezar Lăzărescu, Sorana Lupu, Cristina Moraru, Cristian Nae, Andrei Pripasu, Alex Tănăuceanu and Ionuț Toma.
tranzit. ro/ Iași has organised for two days a marathon event, with a semi-public character, with no photographic documentation. Projection and memory were the main instruments used in order to design and later to reconstitute the 12 tours made in pairs, 1:1. The twelve "guides" (artists, curators, theorists, one architect and one translator from Iași) offered one tour each to one or the other of the two invited artists, the latter being accompanied, as a result on six personal propaganda walks.
Originally designed as a propaganda service that tranzit. ro/ Iaşi could offer its guests, this institutional practice takes one step further and becomes externalised, thus creating infinite possibilities of imagining an urban space, both for the hosts and the guests.
The propaganda walks were designed for the first time as an institutional practice by Livia Pancu, on the occasion of the ENPAP - European Network for Public Art Producers meeting organised by the Vector Association in Iaşi in 2011.

March – May 2014 /
A new project will start with the residency of Bucharest-based international Romanian artist Cristina David. She will inaugurate in March the newest chapter of tranzit. ro/ Iaşi regarding the residency program venture in our city. This invitation was sent after the encounter with her application for the AiR programme of tranzit and the ERSTE Foundation at MuseumsQuartier - 2014, a project that tranzit. ro/ Iaşi is very keen to produce in Iaşi. Cristina will collaborate for this project with the Danish writer Mikkel Rosengaard. Being interested a priori in the "democracy" of the "openness of calls" in the arts domain, tranzit. ro/ Iaşi is thus trying to question this issue both as its own practice, as well as the others' practice in the art world.

*THEME OF THIS EDITION: MATTERS OF METHOD*
When speaking about any type of action, be it physical or mental, an immediate transcription makes us describe it as a method. There are goals to be attained (however frivolous or blurry they might be) and an initial situation to start from. The method always develops in between these two. But what happens when the steps to take are not so clear, when the goal is lacking clarity or it even seems to be irrelevant? What motivates the use of a method and what feeds it?
