Artur Żmijewski - Patricia, 2007, 00:16:43
Jan Peter Hammer - The Fable of the Bees, 2012, 00:08:35

This is the sixth presentation taking part of a 7 selections from Video-Forum (n.b.k.) which is also the oldest collection of video art from Germany. The project is taking place from July to October 2015.

The selection that will be screened on Saturday, 31st of October is realized by Lavinia German.
“The proposed selection brings together three projects that extend the contemporary discourse towards the production systems, power structures and explicit negotiations that govern the relationship between the political domain and the economic realm. Haegue Yang's video essay (Holiday Story, 2007) proposes, in a formal but emotional, contemplative manner, a critical perspective on the concept of "leisure" in late capitalism, in which rest is merely a way of preparing for future work. The video portrait Patricia (2007) is a pretext for Artur Żmijewski to illustrate forms of power present in the democratic system and social factors that give rise to disputes over conduct and rules. Made in the style of a reality show, with an analytical non-linear cut, this visual diary decontextualizes the individual and accelerates the everyday anxiety. Jan Peter Hammer simulates in an ironic vein a video production made at home for YouTube (The Fable of the Bees, 2012), reminding of the motivational videos so popular in online social networks. The work is based on the 1705 poem “The Fable of the Bees: or, Private Vices, Public Benefits” by Bernard Mandeville, in which the author discusses the ethical foundations of the economic policy and the factors that support social development.” (Lavinia German)

Lavinia German is a lecturer at the “George Enescu” University of Arts in Iaşi and a member of the Centre for Contemporary Photography (Iaşi). Her recent activity has included coordinating and curating local cultural events and of contemporary art exhibitions.

This project can be regarded as an attempt to allow a different approach of the concept of “collection” and producing new contexts for the local video-art production in Iași. Each selection will be offering a subjective and unique image of Video-Forum and also new understanding of how the international video art history is working on the tissue of new video productions in Iași.

Video-Forum at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.)
Founded in 1971 as an artists’ initiative, the Video-Forum, with its over 1,600 works of video art, is the oldest collection of video art in Germany. Key works by artists from the 1960s and 1970s are represented on an equal footing with contemporary productions. The Video-Forum regularly co-produces new works and organizes regular exhibitions, screenings and discussions related to video art. Visitors may view works in the collection free of charge.
