On May 12-17 2014 tranzit.ro/Iași is involved as a partner in the "Passing by" - Urban Interventions Workshop, a project initiated by the Association of Architecture Students in Iași and studioBASAR, a young team of architects based in Bucharest.

Public Workshop
The process of education consists most of the times of exercises of accumulation, testing, and experimenting performed under ideal laboratory conditions, distant from the object of the study. This workshop desires to be a live project, engaged in real time in the local urban condition, where alternative means of production of the circumstances of the public space can be performed, transcending the answers formulated by the administrative institutions, economic entities or the society of show-business. Through the workshop, we will try to inspect the instruments of understanding and acknowledging of the urban space, but also the professional machinery out of which interventions in the public space are made of, their relevance and role in consolidating a series of recuperation and reconstruction processes of the public space, as a common product.

Theme: Passing by
The main theme of the workshop is set to investigate areas which are located in the near vicinity of a series of representational public spaces: all those places with a diffuse and ambiguous identity. These areas are situated behind the public spaces they are serving directly, at the edge of the local inhabitants' mental geography. These anonymous territories function as spaces of passing by and connection, suspended between landmark places of the city center and the rest of the city. Throughout the duration of the workshop we will debate and test on the spot means of deciphering the character and potential of this particular species of public space.

Workshop Script
For six days, between the 12th and 17th of May, we will proceed in an open work platform from the concept stage to a finalized project, through actions and activities of organizing, communication, design, production and concretization of the intervention. The participants will fabricate objects out of wood, and have this creations set into place in the vicinity of the Lăpușneanu Street.
The workshop is addressed to a number of approximately 20 participants and will be coordinated by Alex Axinte, Cristi Borcan, Maria Daria Oancea, (studioBASAR), Tudor Elian and Andrei Pripasu.

On Saturday, the 17th of May, at 7:00 p.m. the results of the workshop will be presented to the public in an open event held at tranzit.ro/ Iași, 7-9 Al. Lăpușneanu St.

studioBASAR was established in 2006 by Alex Axinte and Cristi Borcan, both as an architectural studio and a Search-and-Rescue team, that acts as an agent of urban observation and intervention. In the past years, studioBASAR developed several chapters of the Search-and-Rescue: City project, as a strategic search that investigates the dynamics of the contemporary Bucharest. These chapters aim is to adapt to the local urban conditions by developing negotiation tools, and in the same time by drawing attention on marginal and trivial topics such as banality, improvisation or illegality as active ingredients of the local urban culture. The projects of studioBASAR range from public space interventions, art installations, urban research to competitions and different typologies of residential and public buildings.
