Evald Ilyenkov (1924-1979) is the most important Soviet Marxist philosopher of the postwar. He has written on a large gamut of subjects, from problems of theoretical philosophy, theory of knowledge, the concepts of the “abstract” and the “concrete”, the “ideal”, and the universal, to Marx’s materialist dialectical method in Capital, problems of cybernetics, automation, machine-thinking, to problems of pedagogy, theory of education, psychology, human mind, and ethics and aesthetics. Ilyenkov can be considered the philosophical originator of what is known as “activity theory” in the Soviet Union, which in its turn precedes what is known as Cultural-Historical Activity Theory internationally nowadays. The concepts, ideas and theories of Ilyenkov have influenced generations of younger philosophers from the 1950s to present in Eastern Europe, while recently enjoying an increased attention in the anglophone world.
The aim of these monthly reading seminars is to closely familiarize the participants with the key concepts and theories developed by Ilyenkov with the hope of utilizing them in the face of contemporary polycrisis.

The Museum of Real Estate Development invited us to imagine ourselves in the future, in a museum space where the public can see the material traces of real estate development from the beginning of the third millennium in several cities of the world. This exercise of imagination (the detachment from the present) aimed to allow us a critical position towards the phenomenon studied as part of contemporary capitalism. Real estate development was not seen as a finished process, but as an all-pervasive phenomenon that continued to be perpetuated and reinvented, and the cutting of spatio-temporal manifestations of this process turned them into targets of the social-political-cultural critique.
Such moments of attempted critique are also represented by the selected video materials that were produced during the last 3 decades (1994-2024) in Iasi or in the region.
At one level of analysis - that was many times erroneously identified as the city - we can observe in these video productions how the political-economic and social transformations of the last 3 decades have often become objects of artistic and intellectual critical reflection. At different levels of analysis, during the same period of time, we also uncritically experienced paradigmatic shifts in the domain of cultural production itself, the purpose of which was constantly re-calibrated aiming at the emergence and solidification of individual subjectivities that speak for and on behalf of the entire society.

Feeding a growing world population with sustainably produced food has been a challenge and it became critically important in the wake of covid-19, climate change, the wars in ukraine and gaza, and the rise of the far right in europe. while politicians debate how to make our food systems more innovative and resilient, there is a solution that has been available and practised in eastern europe for decades. smallholder farming and local food networks are widespread in many post-socialist countries, but are not typically seen as sustainable alternatives to globalised industrial agriculture. meanwhile, as the example of ukraine has shown, these practices are not only environmentally friendly and sustainable, but also capable of feeding the country’s population with healthy food in peace and wartime.

„Post-War ‘Crisis of Marxism’: Insights from Yugoslav Marxist Revisionists”
In my talk, I discuss the ‘crisis of Marxism’ and ‘crisis of socialism’ by looking at the example of Yugoslav Marxist Revisionists. Their discourses of crisis encompassed debates on the crisis of epistemology, the crisis of subjectivity, and the crisis of philosophy taking place in Western European intellectual circles. The disorientation and atomization of the human being—phenomena they adopted and adjusted from the analysis of Western technological societies—inevitably led to a disintegration of Yugoslav society, alongside the latent growth of ethnonational affirmations in the early 1970s. I point out how their conceptual framework of crisis facilitated the adoption of integral ethnonationalist philosophical and political positions.

On 15 March, at 19:00, the sixth edition of the project "Revisiting State Socialism" took place with the title "Dance music as a metaphor for socialist acceleration in Romania in the 60s and 80s". The guests were Paul Breazu and Mihai Lukács, and the meeting was moderated by Ștefan Baghiu.
Socialist time was perceived in the late 1960s as accelerated, no longer corresponding to a linear flow, the sound of factory production being associated with new music that was beginning to incorporate electronic sound. In the following decades, Romanian pop, light and electronic music grew in parallel with the new industrialization and development at speed, becoming a soundtrack of the new material conditions of late socialism. Romanian pop ("light") music branched out in new directions in the early 1970s, and its social character gained momentum for creators and the general public. Composer and music historian Laurențiu Profeta noted in 1976 the emergence of militant light music songs in the later years, many of which became slams, reaching a much wider audience. Seen as a result of the party's ideological programme, which left no artistic sector untouched, social-political light music songs became imposed themselves authoritatively. Socialism was not just an economic project, but a complex that encompassed political, social, cultural and artistic dimensions, so the systemic projection onto a pop sub-genre like dance music was not left to chance.

András Vigvári's book deals with the grassroots responses to the housing crisis in Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on the settlement of suburban private agricultural areas. The book presents an ethnographic study of the settlement of a suburban garden area on the outskirts of a town near Budapest, once an agricultural and weekend housing area, and discusses the results of the fieldwork as part of global social and housing processes.

Socialism, Alternative Globalization, and Human Rights
talk by Raluca Grosescu & Bogdan Iacob
State socialism had a crucial role in post-war globalization and the subsequent crafting of international law. During the Cold War, Eastern Europe produced trans-regional circulations, epistemic networks, and institutional projects alternative to but interconnected with those generated in the West. Decolonization was the catalyst for socialist globalism in international organizations, at the level of inter-governmental relations and in terms of reconceptualizing norms and hierarchies.

Jan Mervart, "Genealogy of Czechoslovak Stalinism"
Czechoslovak Stalinism represents a unique case within the countries of East Central Europe, because of its long duration based on the continuous legality of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. The author's focus is primarily on capturing the genealogy of Stalinism as a Gesamtkunstwerk based on the interconnectedness of individual conceptualizations, representations, and modes of communication. In doing so, he considers the central logos of Stalinism to be the dynamic that emerged from the tension between the constant fluidity of Stalinist policy and strategy, and the desire to formulate a unity of basic premises and binding rules.

Radical realism is what the après-garde filmmaker of the roman calls a style with no silent extras: everyone's voice is heard.

”Contemporary art offers an infinite anthology on issues of significance. Artists represent diverse voices and perspectives, which not only define their niche art practices but may also have social underpinnings. Artistic practices that combine creativity with strategic planning, that aim at spreading awareness to create an impact and/or bring about a change are considered activist in nature. One very popular example is the Guerrilla Girls who choose art as a medium to fight against gender bias and racism that persists within the art world. In New York, 1985, the masked group of women created posters and public letters questioning the existing norms and brought a new awareness on discrimination. Another globally recognised artist-activist from China is Ai Wei Wei, whose art is a reflection of his absolute distrust in the manipulative and corrupt political system of his country.

Thinking about various “point zero” moments in international history is rooted in a venerable and long-standing tradition. The traditional assumption, according to which a global point zero would constitute a return to the „state of nature”, a moment of anarchical self-help and violence, has been superseded in the 20th century by theorizing about the potential of such a point zero to overcome difficult legacies of power politics, opening a new vista for constructing an international utopia, a Cosmopolis or “world city” of universal rights and security. Such legacies and hopes clashed in 1918-1919, as World War I drew to a close and the Paris Peace Conference was preparing to convene, and again from 1943 onwards as planning began about a new Europe and a new world after the elimination of the Nazi, fascist and imperial Japanese threats. 1989 brought about a return to utopian thinking about „overcoming” anarchy and insecurity in the international system, a process conceptualized in surprisingly similar terms to patterns of thought familiar from 1918-1919.

What kind of model do we want to develop, to allow both the exploitation of diversity for the benefit of an expanding world population, and the preservation, in quality and quantity terms, of that diversity on which we depend? We must respond to this question as quickly as possible if we are not to succumb to the inevitability of irreversible forces of destruction, but rather to develop in every conceivable field a mental territory of optimism – a garden.” (Gilles Clément, 2021)

After decades of sophisticated historical research and professional myth busting, academic and popular images of the Enlightenment seem today to be further apart than ever. However, the political question of the legacies of the Enlightenment, whether salutary or deleterious, is once again in season. This talk will argue, firstly, that these legacies are contextual, contradictory, open-ended and ready to be appropriated in creative ways; and secondly, that more than theories, values or attitudes, critical or political – the quest for peace, rationalism, secularism, tolerance, rights of man etc. -, it was above all a few epistemic dislocations brought about by the Enlightenment that proved to be revolutionary for the modern understanding of history, culture and society.

The debate between Jean Luc Nancy and Maurice Blanchot started in the 80’s around the question of the constitution of a community in the exchange surrounding Nancy’s The Inoperative Community and Blanchot’s The Unavowable Community, and recently a belated answer in Nancy’s The Disavowed Community surround the question of reading and the subject. Following these texts we will be asking who is the subject that reads and how is reading always already together. This has extreme relevance to artists and scholars that find themselves frequently outside the conventional professional gathering places like galleries, museums or universities and are craving dialog and a sense of community.

Science tells us that we are playing a pyramid scheme with the habitability of our Earth. It also tells is that we are getting close to the panic and unravelling stages of that pyramid scheme, with a stabilization of warming at below 2 degrees Celsius being our optimistic scenario. This reckless game is embedded in institutional complementarities that make it politically and economically costly to arrest the causal generators of environmental collapse. It seems that as a species we can’t help but have the greatest death wish of all.

FEINART Lecture Series with Gregory Sholette, Artist, Activist, Writer /
19.03.2021 – starting at 5:00pm CET
In the frame of the FEINART lecture series the author Gregory Sholette approaches his subject from the unusual dual perspective of commentator (as scholar and writer) and insider (as activist artist). He describes a new wave of activist art taking place not only within community-based protest groups, as it has for decades, but also amongst professionally trained, MFA-bearing art practitioners, many of whom, by choice or by circumstance, refuse to respect the conventional borders separating painting from protest, or art from utility.

At first glance, it would appear that debates about forces and relations of production, and their mutual relationship, which were once fundamental concepts of historical materialism, have by now all but disappeared from contemporary socio-economic discourse and, implicitly, from the socio-economic reality itself. And yet, their active presence is felt as soon as we scratch a bit the surface of today’s reality.

December 10th, at 7pm.
Moderator: Dana Domșodi
Technology and its triumphalist reprezentation together with technologic progress represent not only defining elements of the modern imaginary, but also central pieces in the political anticapitalist repertoire. When talking about ecological crisis, labor emancipation or social-democrat measures designed to contain and mitigate the structural crises of global capitalism, technology always appears as a restraining tool of present contradictions. This presentation explores the role of technology in the context of capitalist ecomodernization and its possible functions within anticapitalist ecologist struggles while looking at the high-speed railway project from Spain. Spain, world leader in high-speed railway constructed kilometers, but also in the number of airports and built highway kilometers, has experienced in the last two decades a series of transformations that can serve as a benchmark in evaluating the progressive contemporary proposals such as Green New Deal and the technological modernizations as a solution to the problems of the capitalist society.
Natalia Buier has studied sociology and anthropology. Presently she researches the connection between economic crises, ecological transformations and infrastructure. She is a graduate of the Departament of Sociology and Anthropology from CEU, currently being affiliated to the Max Planck Institute of Social Anthropology. She obtained her Phd. at CEU with a thesis on historical memory and labor movements in the Spanish railway system.

At the invitation to make a public presentation of my own artistic practice I chose to talk about two of the personal research conducted in 2019: THE CEMENT PLASTER FINISH WALL OF A PETIT BOURGEOIS and the project ARTIST, I BUY AN APARTMENT IN THIS BLOCK! both curated by Florin Bobu and Livia Pancu. The online presentation of the two projects represents an opportunity to discuss extensively and in an appropriate framework about their cultural and personal foundations. At other times, they aim to present to the general public other visual materials that formed the basis of the artworks.

November 27th, 2020, at 7 pm.
In 2019, Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiels made waves by stating that “AI is literally communist” while a few years earlier the accelerationist philosopher Nick Land set out to demonstrate “the teleological identity of capitalism and artificial intelligence”. Few other recent technologies have exercised so much ideological fascination, not to mention inspiring an ever-growing output of policy papers on governance and ethics. This talk maps out some of the key issues in contemporary debates that project the political economic future of AI beyond the current moment of platform capitalism. It reviews the positions of left accelerationism, postcapitalism and fully automated luxury communism, focusing on the major blind spot: ownership and control of the means of production. It concludes by emphasizing the increasing push towards imagining AI as commons, while acknowledging the ease with which tech platforms can stimulate open-source AI tools and re-appropriate their products.

Apáczai Csere János Theoretical High School, Cluj-Napoca
The strategy of the 3rd “Save As” Pedagogy Conference, as in previous years, is based on the fact that pedagogy, being inter- and multidisciplinary requires an education system connected to all institutions of society. The aim of the conference is to involve professionals and students working together with public schools, as well as individuals and institutions part of the academic and civil sectors. As a platform for professionals, the conference provides an opportunity to discuss issues that are often overlooked in the public education system, in teacher training, and during policy-making. Bringing marginal issues into mainstream discussions, and building collaborations is another goal of the organizers that can bring about change at a local level and serve as inspiration for others.
The conference will take place at the Apáczai Csere János Theoretical High School, Cluj-Napoca, between the 29th of February and the 1st of March. The organizers are looking forward to hosting 200 participants. The program includes 8 lectures and 14 workshops/seminars.

What's the situation in Hungary? How does the Orban regime work and why? The latest issue of the Journal of Social Theory "Fordulat" analyzes current Hungarian political, economic and social processes. Many narratives about the "NER" have been born. The unique contribution of this issue is that its authors (members of the Working Group for Public Sociology "Helyzet") do not examine the Orbán regime as a unique political construct, but within a broader historical, political economy framework on the basis of world system theory.

In 2012, Itziar BARRIO was commissioned to realize a new work in the frame of ”Going Public, Telling as it is?” - ENPAP Symposium in Bilbao. The project ”We could Have had it all” was the result of her re-encounter with her native city in relation with her own topics of research and Consonni team, the institution that coordinated the production of the project in the frame of the European Network for Public Art Producers’s final event. Back in time, it was a question that transformed this work into an on-going process: “How would you transform this work into a site specific project somewhere else?”, a question that was based on a very personal, basic juxtaposition of images of the Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao and the National Theatre in Iași.

We invite you to Cluj, between 24-26 May 2013, to discuss about our collective and individual activists struggles carried out in different arenas and around multiple issues. Our emancipatory projects are related to fundamental aspects for us as individuals and for our collective survival and dignity. We want a just world, in which issues of living in society can be politicized, transformed and negotiated collectively. Authority over the structure of the social fabric is to be held collectively. While we may prioritize differently what the central issues or the central node of emancipation are, our strength is that we can see them as interrelated. Even if not always explicitly, we carry these fights together.
