“My presentation had as a starting point the gap between nationalist discourse and geopolitical reasoning in Romania's foreign policy towards Hungary in 1919. Exactly 100 years ago, the Romanian Kingdom was in a process of a gradual seizure of territories from what was then the Hungarian Republic, a process that resulted in the final establishment of the current border between the two states. On the one hand, this process of territorial augmentation was an integral part of the project of "unifying" the Romanian territories; thus, the land grabbing was explained through an idealistic narrative combining history with demographics and metaphors with scientific explanations in order to produce a nationalist discourse fraught with ethical considerations related to the meaning of the notion of "Romania". On the other hand, the same land-grabbing process was justified through strategic and geopolitical considerations, such as the need to "stave off Bolshevism" or to acquire important railway hubs. Such considerations have less to do with the idealistic policy of nationalism, and more with realistic calculations regarding political power and defeating political adversaries.” (Manuel Mireanu, 2019)
