What remains of May 68?

Thursday, 24th of May 2018, 6 pm

Brassai Samuel St, no 5

This year we celebrate 50 years since the protest movements of 1968, which are seen as the birth scene of the „New Left”, but also as the inaugural moment of what has been identified as the „New spirit of capitalism”.

50 years, that is, since imagination is both in power, and in opposition.

In this anniversary yet paradoxical context, we invite you to revisit and interrogate this double legacy of May 68 for our world: in what measure is this strict contemporaneity between the New Left and the New spirit of capitalism a conjectural simultaneity or a structural affinity? Or, the other way around, in what measure the enduring spirit of 68, with its libertarianism, creativity, and petit bourgeoisie radicalism, can actually address the material problems and specific injustice of our time, or should be seen as merely the subjective and superstructural reflection of the new capitalism? How accurate and adequate are these concepts – New Left, New spirit of capitalism – for what was 68, but also for our time? In brief, how much of the 68 is still alive with us, and if much, how proud, or annoyed, should we be about it?
