Historical Materialism Cluj/Kolozsvár – Interregnum Here and Now

The second Historical Materialism conference will take place in Cluj-Napoca between 16–18 April 2026, with more than 180 participants having applied, from all around Europe and even beyond. The main venue of the conference will be the building of the Faculty of European Studies, BBU (Emmanuel de Martonne street, nr. 1), with sessions also taking place at the main building of Babeș-Bolyai University (Mihail Kogălniceanu street, nr. 1) and the French Institute (Ion I. C. Brătianu street, nr. 22).

Keynote presentations are scheduled for each day as following:
- on April 16 from 5:30–7:30 pm. Saladdin Ahmed Bahozde will hold a talk entitled “Going beyond the Nihilist War of Apocalyptists in West Asia: Historical Extinction and Spatial Emancipation”;
- on April 17 from 5:30–7:30 pm Sirma Bilge will hold her presentation “Intersectionality in Interregnum: a Conjunctural Reading”;
- on April 18 Keti Chukhrov will conclude the conference with her talk “On the Political-Economic Infrastructure of Post-Socialist Techno-Feudalisms.”

The conference will also include two tranzit.ro sessions:

1. The first one on April 17, 3:00–5:00 pm, entitled "Forms of Mediation in the Interregnum: Labour, Culture, Ecology and Struggle" featuring presentations from Anna Chiara Mezzasalma, Fatih Müldür, Francesca Rosso and Elena-Maria Cautiș.

2. The second one will take place on April 18, 9:30–11:30 am, entitled "Intellectuals in Socialist and Postsocialist Europe", followed by a roundtable discussion with Imre Ungvári Zrínyi, Monika Woźniak and Alex Cistelecan, moderated by Botond Szilágyi.

This conference is organised under the aegis of Historical Materialism: Research in Critical Marxist Theory, which supports a journal a book series and Marxist conferences across the globe. The conference is part of the PHILSE project ran by Janovics Center for Screen and Performing Arts Studies at BBU Cluj-Napoca, STRASYN project ran by Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, and partnered by tranzit.ro/Cluj.
