Literary Migration? (On Writing Literature in a Dominating Language)

Reading and discussion

Friday, 2 November 2018, 7 pm

Reading and discussion with the kollektiv sprachwechsel in Viena and Ovid Pop

MACAZ – Bar Teatru Coop
Moşilor street, no. 106, Bucharest, Romania

“What literary effects are gained by adopting a new language? How do economic constraints and citizenship determine the literary production? Can we confront together the gender and the language based discrimination? Is migration a emancipatory metaphor when dealing with writers who write in a second language? And what is the link with the labor migration in general? And with the refugee camps?” (Ovid Pop)

The members of the kollektiv sprachwechsel together with Ovid Pop read excerpts from their literary works and discuss different strategies of writing in German as a second language. The discussion touches upon hierarchies in the literary field in Europe, procedures of subverting dominance through language, ways by which we can make a language, that marginalizes, our own. On this occasion Ovid Pop presents his most recent book Domeniul Celor Vii – The Estate of the Living (essay, poetry, prose), Tranzit Iași, 2018.

Texts are in German with Romanian translation. Discussion in Romanian, German and English.
