This is the second presentation taking part of a 7 selections from Video-Forum (n.b.k.) which is also the oldest collection of video art from Germany. The project is taking place from July to October 2015.
The selection that will be screened on Sunday, 13th of September is realized by Cristian Nae.
”My selection proposes a singular reading perspective over the social utopias and of the technological imagination that formed the foundation of western modernity. Eduardo Paolozzi did not work with moving images in a programmatic or consistent manner. Better known as a visual artist of the first wave of British Pop-Art, he showed, however, a constant interest for popular culture and for technological imagination. A History of Nothing is an atypical movie for several reasons: firstly because it is a mixture of found-footage in which artistic research takes the place of art history research; secondly, because it unveils a popular imagination camouflaged in historical avant-gardes such as Dadaism and Surrealism, known mainly for the politization of art through their insistence on strange constructions or machines. Therefore he produces a knowledge that is alternative to that communicated by standard art history books. Last, but not least, in the local context, in which the discourse that has immediate social relevance is preferred to the museum discourse (in the absence of strong institutions and of collections that would facilitate it), such a selection is an assumed curatorial extravagance – non-topical in either time or space.” (Cristian Nae)
This project can be regarded as an attempt to allow a different approach of the concept of “collection” and producing new contexts for the local video-art production in Iași. Each selection will be offering a subjective and unique image of Video-Forum and also new understanding of how the international video art history is working on the tissue of new video productions in Iași.
Video-Forum at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.)
Founded in 1971 as an artists’ initiative, the Video-Forum, with its over 1,600 works of video art, is the oldest collection of video art in Germany. The focal points of the collection are Fluxus, feminist video, the historical and contemporary situation for video art in Berlin, as well as approaches reflecting on the media. Key works by artists from the 1960s and 1970s are represented on an equal footing with contemporary productions. The Video-Forum regularly co-produces new works and organizes regular exhibitions, screenings and discussions related to video art. Visitors may view works in the collection free of charge.
