GRID is an incursion into the digital culture of image and representation that is based on a collaborative research by the artist Andrei Nacu in partnership with the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) in London and the Multidisciplinary Research Institute in Art (ICMA) within UNAGE Iași, realized in two exhibitions hosted by RAI London and Tranzit/Iasi and produced by Galeria ElectroPutere.
”The present project follows some particular aspects of image production, taking as a reference an imaginary scale like the grid, found both in anthropometric photography and in contemporary digital image productions with the aim of mapping and representing the world.
The works made by Andrei Nacu are constituted as complementary discursive forms with the aim of thematizing the new types of image production of digital capitalism and ostensive ideology often marked by sociopath-ism, hyperproduction, and accelerationism; as a new
paradigm of vernacular photography that abandoned the materiality of the family album to reconfigure itself in a digital avatar.
The exhibition hosted by Tranzit Iasi captures some conceptual and material limits of the act of visual representation through image and presence. The exhibited works emphasize the affective and psychic side of the visual language marked by the combined desire to seek and reveal the "ultimate image" and the limit given by the finite and constantly changing framework of matter and representation. GRID discusses art's ability to invent discursive forms through the energy of
an artistic and curatorial reflection that questions the context of contemporary art and culture based on image production and display.” (Adrian Bojenoiu, 2023)
Andrei Nacu (b. 1984) is a visual artist based between London, U.K. and Iasi, Romania. In his creative practice he is using documentary photography, the family album and the photographic archive to create stories which analyze the junction between personal memory and social history. His most recent work includes video, installation and performance and focuses on the politics of representation and media archaeology. Currently he is working as a Photo Curator at the Royal Anthropological Institute, London.
