(…) but the earth is the soil, la madre tierra, sentient darkened matter that aggregates and clusters geological spectral creatures drifting their traces around the unremovable craters of the modern extractive industries. In the midst of anthropogenic extinction, the erratic compost of sediments and minerals that ferment the ground depths with sorrow and excess become political symbols and cosmological agents. They are the tell-tale remnants that haunt the economically carved landscape, spreading around the shades of past and future meaning they hide, carry and muster within. In the fractures between human deeds and lithospheric plates, necropolitics cease to afflict only the human beings as the sole life-forms subjected to the dispositives of death, and widens its slender heavy tentacles to capture geological creatures: stones, pebbles, rocks that running across in chemical cycles compose the strata of a mud ecology. They are spirits germinating in conditions of uncertainty and indeterminacy rather than faith and belief, naming a metaphysics that lost the possibility to distinguish between bios and geos. They are manifest and disembodied, carrying the curse of spectral times and furnishing the promise of an estranged topology. In the shadow of extinction, their muddied shimmer still beckons and purl the incipit of worlds.

Anca Bucur is an artist whose practice is embedded in both theoretical speculative research and conceptual entanglements. She has a background in literature and theory, and works in disobedient manners with different mediums in order to exploit their material-semiotic patterns and to intersect their political repositories. She explores separately or conjunctively language, sound, performance or visual arts. Recently, her works were included in Liminal Festival at the National Museum of Maps and Old Books in Bucharest, and her performances that were part of the Imagine Human project, could be seen at tranzit. ro/ București, CNDB, and Anca Poterașu Gallery. She is the co-author of two poetry books and the co-founder of fractalia press. Currently, her interests revolve around the ecologies of the void and the metaphysics of darkness, joining spectrality and matter.

The Last Archive found a home in the space of tranzit. ro/ București from the very beginning of this project, when we made a public call for newspapers published on the 21st of December 2012, one of the most publicized dates announcing the end of the world. This ongoing project gathered seven events, exhibitions or performances, programmed with the precision of the Doomsday clock on the 21st of December, every year, in the space on 44 Gazelei Street.

Péter Szabó, Monotremu, Giles Eldridge, Vilmos Koter, Kiki Mihuță, Maria Baroncea and now Anca Bucur are the artists who made possible the existence of The Last Archive, enlarging its concept with their insights into the end of the world.

Anca Bucur’s exhibition is the last in the current space of tranzit. ro/ București, however, the collaboration with The Last Archive will continue in the following years.

The Last Archive is an ongoing project of the artist Vlad Basalici.
