The End of the World as We Know It: Field Notes

A Performance by Maria Baroncea

tranzit. ro/ București
Str. Gazelei 44, sector 4

Together with: Andreea David, Mădălina Dan, Paul Dunca, Monica Ivanov, Maria Mora

“Only a white-haired old man, who would be a prophet
Yet is not a prophet, for he’s much too busy,
Repeats while he binds his tomatoes:
There will be no other end of the world,
There will be no other end of the world.”

(Czeslaw Milosz, A Song on the End of the World, 1944. Translated from Polish by Anthony Milosz)

Together we contemplate the end of the world we know. It happens now, but it has also been happening for a while. There won’t be another end. According to the formula ‘any end has also a beginning’, we are witnessing also the beginning of a new world. We function as field recorders: through the senses we gather data from within us and from among us. And we utter them. We see with the night view, we hear the sound which is the closest, we breathe, we smell and we recognize. We are, as a form or as another one (I hold your hand to make it clear for myself what I am). And we resonate. We contemplate the end. And the beginning. (Maria Baroncea)

The space of tranzit.ro/ București will be open from 7 to 10 pm, but the performance has a fixed duration, from 7:30 to 9 pm.

Maria Baroncea, born in Bucharest, lives in Bucharest and Berlin. She is choreographer and performer. She has studied at the National University of Theatre and Cinematography (UNATC) in Bucharest and at the MA SODA (solo dance authorship master studies) at UDK - HZT Berlin.
