“For Periferic 7 Biennial Jens Haaning will realize a new work”. This was the artist’s contribution to the catalogue of the Periferic 7 International Biennial for Contemporary Art in Iasi, in 2006. The work by him: 10 catalogues Periferic 7 sent to a post office from Africa, randomly chosen, started with the act of sending 10 sets of biennial catalogues from Iasi, Romania to the central mail office of Conackry, Guinee.

11 years later, the Jens Haaning is returning to Iasi for a new collaboration with tranzit.ro/ Iaşi this time. His work will unfold in a familiar yet new for him: the city of Iaşi has changed, transformed, lost a biennial, but gained an important position in working for the capital. Its force into transitioning towards capitalism gained even more fuel.

Jens Haaning was born in 1965 in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he currently lives and works. His artistic practice addresses in many instances the ideological and economical hegemony that is designing even the most particular and intimate activities our lives within the neo-liberal system. Often, when encountering one of his projects one may become more reflective on the possibilities of infrastructural redistribution of value and wealth, otherwise difficult to be imagined.

Jens Haaning has exhibited extensively, e.g. documenta XI in Kassel, Germany in 2002, Traffic (curated by Nicolas Borriaud) at CAPC Museé d'art contemporain in Bordeaux, France in 2002, and Periferic 7 Biennale, (curated by Florence Dérieux) in Iaşi, Romania in 2006. In the fall of 2017 a large survey of Haaning’s artistic practice could be seen at the Gothenburg Biennial (curated by Nav Haq) in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Jens Haaning’s contribution in Iasi was supported by Danish Art Foundation as well as through the long term project tranzit. ro/ Iași: Public Space. aLIVE (2016-2018) realized with the financial support of the Iași City Hall, through the 2017 programme for non-reimbursable funding granted by the Iași City Hall budget.
