Tomáš RAFA: New Nationalisms in the Heart of Europe

Exhibition

October 6-21, 2017

tranzit.ro/ Iași
Al. Lăpușneanu St. 7-9

The long term project New Nationalisms in the Heart of Europe contains video reports of political demonstrations, blockades, and protests, often capturing events that are not covered by TV news. Art works of Tomáš Rafa address political issues that are becoming the topic of public debates, in which he is actively partaking as an artist and as an activist.

Racism, xenophobia, protests, demonstrations and blockades are his topics. He rather presents the material "as it is", without declaring his attitude.

The exhibition Tomáš RAFA: New Nationalisms in the Heart of Europe is organiyed in the frame of the project COMUNITĂŢI RE-IMAGINATE ( RE-IMAGINED COMMUNITIES) organized by 1+1 in partnership with tranzit.ro/ Iaşi and „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University Iași and it is co-funded by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.

Tomáš Rafa (1979) is a young Slovak visual artist, laureate of the Oscar Čepan award 2011. After studies in Banská Bystrica and Warsaw, he is collecting visual material in the V4 countries on a long-term basis, focusing on a key question: where is the boundary between patriotism and nationalism? Racism, xenophobia, protests, demonstrations and blockades are his topics. He rather presents the material "as it is", without declaring his attitude. Rafa reflects the contemporary era, in his work as in his lifestyle. His main tool is a camera, his method is documentation and his territory is Central Europe. He is constantly on the move - organizing, reporting, collecting and archiving.

The exhibition Tomáš RAFA: New Nationalisms in the Heart of Europe is simultaneously realized with the international project PATTERNS Lectures, run by "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University Iași, "Borders, Barriers and Protest Culture. The New Politics of Social Movements in Central and Eastern Europe".

The project does not necessarily represent the position of The Administration of the National Cultural Fund. AFCN is not responsible for the content of the project or how project results can be used. These are entirely the responsibility of the beneficiary of the funding.
