Urban Reconversion. From Collective Imaginary to Spatial Planning

International workshop

Cluj, 11-15 June 2018

From industries that ceased their activities or moved out to vacant buildings, new spaces for production, logistics, cultural activities, offices, or to real estate developments, the deindustrialization of Cluj has produced, most times, spontaneous and uncoordinated transformations.

We invite you to discuss together perspectives and ways of transforming the former industrial areas of Cluj in order to address present challenges. In which way can deindustrialization contribute to economic development, on the one hand, and to increasing the quality of urban spaces and of life in Cluj, on the other? Which should be the directions and the priorities for such conversions? In which way can new urban developments respond to housing shortage and unaffordability, to the lack of public space, or promote the Somes riversides as spaces for leisure activities? What role can public institutions play, as well as associations, cultural or artistic organizations, in the evolution of collective imaginaries and in the transformation of these areas?

We invite you to participate together with French students in urban planning and with students in sociology and architecture from Cluj to a public workshop and a debate about the evolution of the area between the streets Fabricii and Fabricii de zahăr, in Cluj.
