Veda Popovici’s online contribution consisted in a poem and a series of drawings. One can still reflect on this really important contribution posted in two episodes on our instagram page.

”Handcuffing. About punishment, justice and utopia
Handcuffing is a poem and a series of graphics illustrating various poses of people in handcuffs. It is not clear who they are, who caught them and why. This ambiguity also includes the stake of the work: "Is it us / or is it them / With bodies / Held tight in steel"? The question is the beginning of reflection on punishment and justice from an anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist and anti-patriarchal perspective. We often imagine ourselves as being trapped, captive, oppressed. And the utopia of our liberation also means justice, redistribution, reparations. And these involve lawsuits too. If our communities propose to practice transformative justice, the question arises “How much punishment / beyond consent / Can we inflict, torment? / How much can we take?” If there is handcuffing, that is punishment, it is mainly a form of prison justice, and we are faced with the need to use handcuffing, how much can we do until we become executioners and jailers too?” (Veda Popovici)

This contribution was possible as part of tranzit Iasi: Periphery. History. Contemporary Art, 2020-2021 project that was realised with the support of the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.
