EXHIBITION AS READING

Through an in depth theoretical and artistic examination of the practice of reading together we will examine how art and culture are becoming an important factor in education and especially peer to peer and intergenerational informal education. As a result, the group exhibitions, the reading groups, the publications will raise awareness and build the capacity of artists and cultural operators to assume this role of educators.
Especially in these confusing times, when COVID – 19 has confined many people to their homes, the practice of reading i.e. interpreting, translating, making sense together of both texts and the world around us allows an intellectual and mental security net. It is also more accessible through digital practices and therefore allows to maintain and further develop the sense of international interdependent community that artists have become used to inhabit. As the reading groups will be conducted online, with participants gathering in Iasi and Belgrade, as well as with participants from additional countries and it will be recorded and promoted online, it will contribute much to the exploring the possibility of thinking together on digital platforms and to public digital culture.
Following the dialog between Blanchot and Nancy we will look at who reading constitutes a community (On reading as a social relation). Following Freire we will research adult literacy as a political endeavor (Adult education). Due to our experience with conducting interviews and following Lazarus and Derrida we will research the experience of interviews and workers inquiries (On the workers inquiries). Finally, following Lukacs and Sutlic we will inquire into the practice of cultural education in workers’ environment (Realism and reality in workers’ environment).
In addition to the theoretical readings we will conduct historical research on how culture has contributed to education in practice in different countries and we will widen the network of collaborators by engaging with organizations that practice informal and peer to peer education in culture today.
The program includes a series of exhibitions by artists such as Anca Benera & Arnold Estefan, Cătălin Gheorghe, Baran Carangli, Beatrice Anghelache, Dana Andrei & Sorin Popescu and Maxim Polyakov.
