Sophie Goltz.Building and Repairing Civic Life: call for public space.

Saturday, 10th of February 2024, 6 p.m.

tranzit.ro/ Iasi @ GreenHouse, Str. Sf. Atanasie nr. 25, Iași

tranzitiasi is welcoming you on this Saturday, the 10th of February to join us for a public lecture with curator and art educator Sophie Goltz.

”Based on the repercussions of Documenta Fifteen and connected with the question of public (art) spaces, this lecture will present artistic and curatorial strategies around notions of remembering. Lately, what it was called "Versöhnungstheater" (spectacle of reconciliation, Czollek), the German Erinnerungskultur (remembrance culture) is questioned in these projects and its institutional manifestations be it a memorial site, museum, archive, walkabout, ritual, or gesture.

Public presentation: Collaborative and Engaging Activism in Contemporary Indian Art: Notes on Agrarian Distress
By PREETI KATHURIA, PhD Researcher, Department of Art History, University of Applied Arts, Vienna

15th of July 2023, 7.00 p.m.
tranzit.ro/ Iasi
Adress: GreenHouse, Str. Sf. Atanasie nr. 25, Iași

”Contemporary art offers an infinite anthology on issues of significance. Artists represent diverse voices and perspectives, which not only define their niche art practices but may also have social underpinnings. Artistic practices that combine creativity with strategic planning, that aim at spreading awareness to create an impact and/or bring about a change are considered activist in nature. One very popular example is the Guerrilla Girls who choose art as a medium to fight against gender bias and racism that persists within the art world. In New York, 1985, the masked group of women created posters and public letters questioning the existing norms and brought a new awareness on discrimination. Another globally recognised artist-activist from China is Ai Wei Wei, whose art is a reflection of his absolute distrust in the manipulative and corrupt political system of his country.

ABOUT READING AS PRODUCTION OF DEBATE

online reading group coordinated by Noa Treister
29th of October - 15th of November, 2021

”Accumulation is one of the crucial aspects of Marx’s analysis of the Capitalist system. Rosa Luxemburg was one of the key figures that initiated a debate on the subject that followed the publication of her The Accumulation of Capital. Reading The Accumulation of Capital – An Anti-critique which was Luxemburg’s answer to her critiques, we will be able to follow the entire debate on this question to consider how to hold a political debate that includes both method and praxis. ” (Noa Treister)

ON READING AS A SOCIAL RELATION

online reading group /

June, 2021

Participants: Noa Treister, Anca Benera & Arnold Estefan, Baran Carangli, Dana Andrei, Beatrice Anghelache, Cătălin Gheorghe, Maxim Polyakov, Mădălina Muscă, Bogdan Popa, Ovidiu Pop, Valentin Cernat, Smaranda Ursuleanu, Andrei Timofte, Ruxandra Simion, Delia Bulgaru, Florin Bobu, Livia Pancu.

The debate between Jean Luc Nancy and Maurice Blanchot started in the 80’s around the question of the constitution of a community in the exchange surrounding Nancy’s The Inoperative Community and Blanchot’s The Unavowable Community, and recently a belated answer in Nancy’s The Disavowed Community surround the question of reading and the subject. Following these texts we will be asking who is the subject that reads and how is reading always already together. This has extreme relevance to artists and scholars that find themselves frequently outside the conventional professional gathering places like galleries, museums or universities and are craving dialog and a sense of community.

In the '80s, fluorescent colours, the so-called "neon" colours, marked pop culture in the West; later on, in Romania, in the early '90s, these colours were highlighting the shift towards another aesthetic register, characteristic for the so-called "transition" period – from socialism to capitalism. Leggings, bracelets, miniskirts, tee-shirts, footballs, backpacks, pens, lollypops, pencil cases, chewing gum wrappers etc. were slightly more valuable for the children and adolescents of those years when they were adorned by one or several of these fluorescent colours. In an apparently bizarre twist, but most likely due to an arcane algorithm of fashion, a new popular reconsideration of these colours it taking place nowadays.

No. 7-9, Iași

In 2012, Itziar BARRIO was commissioned to realize a new work in the frame of ”Going Public, Telling as it is?” - ENPAP Symposium in Bilbao. The project ”We could Have had it all” was the result of her re-encounter with her native city in relation with her own topics of research and Consonni team, the institution that coordinated the production of the project in the frame of the European Network for Public Art Producers’s final event. Back in time, it was a question that transformed this work into an on-going process: “How would you transform this work into a site specific project somewhere else?”, a question that was based on a very personal, basic juxtaposition of images of the Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao and the National Theatre in Iași.
