Alfred Sohn-Rethel, Intellectual labor and manual labor
It is not exactly a coincidence that philosophy has appeared more or less at the same time and place as the first coins. Theoretical knowledge is the product of specific social relations and historical evolutions: the division of labor and the asocial socialization of society by means of commodity exchange. In order to be internalized as mechanism of the pure intellect, abstraction is already active as impersonal mechanism of social mediation and exists as such, as asocial sociality, in the form of money. It is not the product of theoretical thought, but instead theoretical thinking is the reflection and sublimation of this abstract socialization.
