A presentation by Karan Shrestha

Karan Shrestha is an artist who divides his time between Nepal and India. His works overlay encounters in physical landscapes over that of mental maps of people and spaces he comes across so as to examine and restructure notions of the ‘present’. His practice incorporates drawings, sculpture, photography, text, film and video. With stories of every day and every people, his work seeks to blur opposites that build and define our individual and collective identities.

"stealing earth" is a project started in 2018, which addresses how the rhetoric of conservation pertaining to Chitwan National Park, the first protected area in Nepal is used to enclose land, forest and water for the wealthy and powerful and push the poor farther into the margins. The project intends to question the popular belief that the indigenous people are contributors to environmental degradation, whereas in actuality they consume the least amount of resources and for decades have shared a symbiotic relationship with nature.

We invite you to a presentation by Karan Shrestha and an informal discussion with him about his work and about the artistic scene in the places where he lives.

The event is the result of a research trip realised by tranzit curator Raluca Voinea in Kathmandu in 2018 with a grant from the Foundation for Arts Initiatives.
