Coordinated by Dana Domsodi & Alex Cistelecan

Seminar #8

28 April 2018, 5 pm

tranzit. ro/ Cluj
Brassai Samuel St, no 5

The 8th Theories of Property and Poverty seminar will take place Saturday, the 28th of April, at 5 pm, at tranzit.ro/ Cluj. The discussion of the seminar will start from An Inquiry into the Principles of Political Economy, by James Steuart. Considered to be the first text of (political) economy written in English, it still belongs to an economical paradigm still indebted to (late) mercantilism. Moreover, the critique against mercantilism advanced by Adam Smith starts exactly from the disputation and refutation of James Steuart's arguments. To prepare the discussion we cite here a few lines to incite the audience: ''It is more, therefore, through the taste for superfluity, than in consequence of the quantity of coin, that trade comes to be established; and it is in consequence of trade only that we see industry carry things in our days to so high pitch of refinement and delicacy.''
