ATMOSPHERES

@tranzit.ro/Cluj

5 - 30th of April 2021

Exhibition and research program around the last terra nullius of late capitalism, the continuum of atmosphere, from the sea level of the Earth to the interplanetary medium.

During the third (or already fifth?) COVID-19 lockdown period, a group of art students of ENSA Bourges* will participate in an artistic research project conducted by Ferenc Gróf to work on an encyclopedic attempt to create a "nuancier", a chart diagram starting from the mass and energy which fills the surroundings of the planet Earth, through the interplanetary medium to different atmospheres of our solar system. These spheres are in the center of vivid climate debates, wild speculations, terraforming ambitions and neo-colonial dreams. As financial and legal frameworks are under development to pursue a new space race and to encourage the acquiring cosmic resources, the immensity and complexity of interacting particles, radiation and magnetic energy are not only subjects of science but also of the interests of the venture capital. “How do science, social attitudes, economics, and politics intersect in the atmosphere?” asked the question Amy Balkyn, whose work The Atmosphere, A Guide (2013/16)** serves as a blueprint for the first phase of the workshop.

The project get started in April 2021 with online workshops and will continue during the year with studio programs, lectures and open discussion. The result of the inquiries will be shown in the frame of an exhibition at tranzit. ro/Cluj in the end of the year 2021.

Participants: Farah Bahhar, Thomas Bontemps, Alice Da Rold, Léa Devenelle, Kyo Kim, Anna Koutsafti, Anna Ponchon.

Ferenc Gróf (*1972, Pécs)

Ferenc Gróf is a graduate of the Hungarian University of the Arts, Budapest, and since 2012 he has taught at the École Nationale Supérieur d’Art (ENSA) in Bourges (FR). His work considers ideological footprints, at the intersection of graphic design and spatial experiences. He is a founding member of the Parisian co-operative Société Réaliste (2004-2015), whose work considers questions of contemporary political representations and text-based interventions. Société Réaliste’s work has also been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions and biennials such as Shanghai, 2012; Lyon, 2009; and Istanbul, 2009. Since 2015 Société Réaliste is on hiatus, Ferenc Gróf continues his work as an individual artist. His most recent solo exhibitions were Without index (Kiscelli Museum, Budapest, 2016), X with a dot below (OFF Biennale, Budapest, 2017), Or firing of a red star alert (acb Gallery, Budapest, 2018), Anxiocene (Moulins de Paillard, FR, 2019). Gróf lives and works in Paris.

Atmospheres is curated by Ferenc Gróf and Attila Tordai-S.

The event is part of Orbiting Modernity: from the steam engine to galactic debris project developed by tranzit. ro/ Cluj in 2020-202. This starting point represents the basis of an educational research project that aims at exposing the way in which global ecology and the impact of human activity on the environment are over-determined by the structural transformations of modern society.
